Instructional Designer

BAI – the premier provider of breakthrough intelligence, innovation and information for the financial services industry - seeks an Instructional Designer for our St. Louis office. The Instructional Designer will research, design, write, proof, and assure quality of online training products for financial institutions. The Instructional Designer is also responsible for coordinating with internal and external variable resources to ensure timely submission of high-quality deliverables. This position will work with subject matter experts and team members to establish training needs, prepare learning objectives, and define and sequence course content. They will utilize knowledge of adult learning theories, multiple learning styles, and instructional design principles to maximize learner success and ensure overall effectiveness of training programs. They will also review and modify existing programs to meet changing course needs and objectives.
Responsibilities
• Serves as the primary writer for all regulatory updates to courseware.
• Conducts analysis of content for instructional design opportunities and serves as knowledge expert for development of all customer-specific training materials (tailored and custom solutions). Makes recommendations for course content, learning methodology and overall course functionality.
• Designs new courses for the core library and designs supporting materials for technology. This includes developing training scripts by assessing student learning needs; establishing clear, attainable course objectives; writing course outlines, script treatments, course content, quiz questions, comprehension tests, and job aids; while soliciting and taking into consideration Content Specialist and Programmer recommendations for interface design and functionality of courseware.
• Manages all content source files including final scripting with updates.
• Meets deadlines consistently in a fast-paced environment with multiple assignments occurring simultaneously.
• Conducts exhaustive primary and secondary research (including interviews with customers, SMEs, and sales reps) on highly technical, jargon-laden topics to determine the most effective, instructionally-sound, student-friendly methodologies for delivery of content.
• Coordinates with teams of outside resources including writers, instructional designers, SMEs, and proofers to meet agreed-upon initiatives and deadlines.
o Develops objectives, outlines, and other criteria for all scripts to be completed by outside resources.
o Assesses overall effectiveness of scripts provided by outside resources and suggests revisions whenever they fail to meet necessary criteria, ensuring all projects meet the highest of standards.
o Trains and sets accountability standards for internal contract proofers/writers.
• Performs proofing, editing and quality assurance testing of all courseware. Gives final quality stamp of approval prior to release to market. (400+ courses in multiple delivery formats)
• Researches and effectively resolves significant customer complaints and/or suggestions with respect to course content.
• Manages self to establish and meet company goals and deliver by agreed-upon deadlines.
• Makes decisions regarding most effective means of delivering instruction on technical subject-matter.
• Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in related field (English, e-learning, Web design or instructional design)
• Minimum of three years experience in writing and instructional design for computer based training
• Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and fact-checking skills
• A strong background in blended and distance learning
• Strong knowledge and an expert user in Microsoft Office software such as: Powerpoint, Word and Excel; Sharepoint experience is a plus
• Working knowledge of the following software packages preferred: Adobe Captivate, PhotoShop, Acrobat, and Articulate Presenter
• Excellent analytical skills along with the ability to comprehend (often) highly technical source-material
• Strong interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
• Nuanced and effective research abilities
• Keen attention to detail
• Ability to juggle multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines
• Aptitude to set priorities and make independent decisions
• Experience with financial institutions and regulations a plus
